Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus, is Mary Shelley’s classic Gothic tale written in 1818, which tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a gifted young scientist who becomes obsessed with creating life from death. However, the creature he assembles is so repulsive that Frankenstein soon abandons it in horror. Repeatedly rejected by society, the creature turns to violence and seeks to destroy Frankenstein and all those people that he loves. Shelley’s classic novel, begun when she was only nineteen years old, warns of the terrible consequences of man playing God and also explores the themes of revenge, ambition and rejection.

Publié en 1947, La Peste raconte l’histoire du combat entre la peste qui, de plus en plus violente, multiplie les morts dans la ville d’Oran, et des hommes qui vont lutter jusqu’à ce que ce fléau disparaisse. De chapitre en chapitre, le lecteur suit l’action du docteur Bernard Rieux qui travaille à sauver les malades. « Les curieux événements qui font le sujet de cette chronique se sont produits en 194., à Oran. » : ainsi commence ce livre, parmi les plus célèbres du philosophe artiste Albert Camus, prix Nobel de littérature en 1957. Le texte adopte la structure et le ton d’un journal, d’un témoignage, en forme de réflexion allégorique sur le mal et sur la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Car derrière la peste se cache une représentation du nazisme, mais aussi, en général, de la lutte de l’homme contre sa condition et contre la mort. La peste ne symbolise pas seulement l’inacceptable souffrance des innocents, elle représente aussi le mal moral.
