Dorian Gray is new in London and his life changes when he meets the painter Basil Hallward and his friend Lord Henry Wotton. Lord Henry encourages Dorian to live for beauty and youth. This leads Dorian on a strange adventure through the city and society, its theatres and romances, where appearances and intentions do not always match.

Dorian begins to discover not just the glitz of Lord Henry’s circle, but the horror and darkness hiding not too far beneath the surface. The text includes a variety of activities for the four skills and dossiers to explore and expand the cultural and historical aspects associated with the story. In questo celebre racconto umoristico di Oscar Wilde, che costituisce una parodia delle classiche storie di fantasmi, assistiamo alla contrapposizione tra due mondi: quello moderno della famiglia dell’Ambasciatore degli Stati Uniti d’America Hiram B. Otis, e quello del “vecchio continente” che ancora crede ai fantasmi. Il Signor Otis acquista Canterville Chase, per nulla intimorito dal fatto che questo castello sia infestato da un fantasma da ben tre secoli. Neanche gli avvertimenti del proprietario, Lord Canterville, riescono a dissuaderlo dall’andare ad abitare a Canterville Chase con la sua famiglia. In una successione di episodi divertenti e a tratti esilaranti, assistiamo così ai vari tentativi del fantasma Sir Simon di spaventare la famiglia Otis, ma ogni sforzo si rivela inutile perché gli Otis, con atteggiamento tipicamente americano, hanno una soluzione a ogni problema causato dal fantasma. Adattato innumerevoli volte a teatro e sul grande e piccolo schermo, la storia ancora oggi fa sorridere e divertire lettori e spettatori. La storia, narrata con un linguaggio accattivante, è accompagnata da attività didattiche di comprensione, grammatica e lessico, e da dossier di approfondimento con contenuti CLIL. Dorian Gray è un giovane bello, puro e ingenuo che vive a Londra nel XIX secolo. Durante le sedute per un ritratto presso il pittore Basil Hallward, conosce Lord Henry Wotton i cui discorsi spingono Dorian a guardare alla giovinezza come a qualcosa di veramente importante. L’invidia verso il suo ritratto, eternamente bello e giovane, lo porta a stipulare un patto con il diavolo, grazie al quale non sarà Dorian ma il quadro a invecchiare e a mostrare i segni della sua decadenza morale. Un patto che costerà molto caro al protagonista che, dopo una serie di gesti folli, lo condurrà fino alla morte.
